Get the Best of Both Worlds: Gym and Outdoor Workouts

At OT Fitness, we believe that a healthy lifestyle should involve more than just indoor workouts. Spending time outdoors has numerous benefits which is why we encourage our members to spend time outdoors whenever possible. Let’s dive into why soaking up the great outdoors can take your mind and body to the next level.

  1. Brain Boost: Between our phones, TV’s, laptops, and social media, there are so many different things vying for our attention. However, according to researchers, our brains weren’t cut out to be “turned on” all the time. This constant stimulation can lead to “attention fatigue,” or that burnt-out feeling that so many of us get. Fortunately, taking a break from our devices and getting outside in nature can help to “reset” our focus and attention. Once our attention has been restored, “brain fog” is reduced or eliminated, and our ability to solve problems is significantly improved.
  2. Better Physical Health: Mother Nature’s varied terrain challenges your body in ways the gym can’t. Outdoor activities like walking, hiking, biking, swimming, or playing pickleball not only pump up your heart rate but also sculpt your muscles, build endurance and boost overal fitness. By integrating outdoor activities into your fitness regime, you can break through plateaus, build functional strength, and enjoy a sense of adventure.
  3. Nature’s Gift of Vitamin D: Exposure to sunlight is crucial for the body to produce vitamin D, naturally. This vitamin is an essential nutrient for your bones, immune system, and mental well-being. So, by stepping outside, you’re giving your body a much-needed dose of that sunny stuff.
  4. Stress Reduction: Ever feel like the stresses of life are weighing you down? We’ve got the ultimate remedy – nature! Research shows that being outside can calm your mind, reduce anxiety, and kick depression to the curb. A simple walk outdoors during a lunch break can do wonders. To get the most out of it, be mindful of your surroundings. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. This can help you to relax and de-stress.

Even though it might not be possible to spend hours upon hours outside in nature every day, don’t discount the power of taking a five or ten-minute break throughout the day to step outside and get some fresh air. If you’re struggling with high stress, anxiety, or depression, getting outside could have a profound effect on your mood and overall well-being. Remember, the world is your playground, waiting to inspire and invigorate you on your path to a healthier, happier you!
